Difficulty Level of Walks + Hikes

Easy to Moderate
  • We'll be hiking 2 to 6 hours per day on the 5 days that hikes are scheduled
  • Hikes range from 2 to 6.2 miles per hike
  • Hikes are available on 5 of the 7 days; the other 2 days are rest or travel days.
  • All hikes are optional; you can chose to rest a day at any time throughout the trip by staying at our base lodging and exploring the area on your own
  • The terrain we'll find in western Crete is varied: mountain paths, sandy beach, rocky beach, rocky scree, dry sandy riverbeds, cobblestone, dirt paths/roads, gravel paths/roads, and paved roads
  • Hikes take place on easy to moderate, to occasionally steep grades
  • Elevations ranging from sea level to a maximum of 8,600 feet (maximum elevation gain of 2,600 feet occurs on Day 6 when we hike from the foothills to the summit of the White Mountains)
  • During hikes, vehicle support is limited, but a certified backcountry emergency medic accompanies us at all times
  • Please note that good walking boots are essential and participants should be in good health

Lodging

We'll stay in small, clean, comfortable, owner-operated hotels that combine ideal, scenic locations with local charm.
Each of these inns is rated #1 by TripAdvisor for their respective towns.

Meals

All meals are included and are taken together at vetted tavernas, cafes and restaurants.

How simple a thing is happiness:
a glass of wine,
a roast chestnut,
a wretched little camp stove,
the sound of the sea.

All that is required to feel that happiness
here and now is a simple, frugal heart.

— Nikos Kazantzakis

Extend Your Time in Crete

Our Lodging Recommendation in Western Crete
Milia Mountain Retreat Center
Located near the village of Kissamos, Milia is a truly delightful, authentically restored 14th-century mountain settlement which has been transformed into an eco-friendly tourist complex. A glorious location, boasting exceptionally rugged beauty, it is placed among plane trees, chestnut trees, and mountaintops reaching to the skies. You'll find the simple luxury of utter peace and quiet, fresh air, and the soothing sounds of nature.

The style of the cottages is simple and charming. All materials used are natural. The furnishings are locally-handmade pieces mixed with restored antiques. Many of the individual stone cottages actually incorporate the side of the mountain as an interior wall.
